Simply take out your lance and gallop on your horse, the lance should lower. A decent horse and a lance are one of the most devastating combinations that can be brought to bear in Mount and Blade. Try and enter into a tournament that fits your skill-set. The Nords have infantry and axes, the Khergits have horses, bows and javelins. Each kingdom has a different style of tournament. The tournaments are excellent money-makers, but only if you bet on yourself. The melees that you can join at any time only give good payout when you are the last man standing, but they are also good combat practice. The arenas are also a good place to make money. They are crap fighters, but they should advance quickly if you win a couple battles with them. Mercenaries can wait, since you should be able to recruit some peasants at passing villages. Merchanting will get you money, I suppose, but it isn't very exciting. However, there are some general things to keep in mind. First of all, are you playing with any mods? This can vastly change play experience and advice has to be tailored to fit.
